In 1987, the Brundtland report defined sustainable development as “meet[ing] the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” In the 35 years since, how have we made progress towards the aspirations of this definition? How has this definition evolved along with society? How must we redefine our roles and responsibilities as architects, planners, designers, and students of the built and natural environment?
Two new books seek out answers to these questions and their many iterations.
The first book, Beyond Sustainable: Architecture's Evolving Environments of Habitation, theorizes an alternative relationship between human-beings and the constructed environments of habitation they create living in the Anthropocene, an increasingly volatile and unpredictable landscape of certain change.
The second book, Climate Adaptation and Resilience Across Scales: From Buildings to Cities, brings together practitioners and researchers to discuss climate-related resilience from the building to the city scale to provide professionals with guidance on adapting the built environment to a changing climate.
The book launch event includes a panel discussion moderated by Zuzanna Drozdz with the authors as well as panelists Joyce Hwang and Jamie Vanucchi. Following the panel there will be a reception at Duende at Silo City including the bat inspired music of Shawn Chiki.
Attendees arriving by car should park in the Design Center parking lot. The Design Center building will serve as an alternate venue in case of inclement weather. Copies of the both books will be on sale at the venue courtesy of Talking Leaves Books.
